We have become an industry of tents
As an industry we have been through significant changes over the last 10 years there are many more changes that still have not come to life.
We talk about “change “but what in reality has happened the good ,the bad ,and the ugly are still here in some respects or have gone to the wall and those that are left have
embraced change head on, we talk about all the smart solutions from cross media to the digital age, W2P, as an industry how do we now days view training?
I listen to business on how they interrupt training and in honesty most of the reasons around not pursing training are based on the present rather than the business future; companies still do not see that there biggest asset is their staff.
The most common reasons are:
- No internal management structure to support training
- No idea what they want or need but know they need something
We still as an industry have the same issue’s that we had 10, 15 even
20 years ago , Managing Directors a lot of them still have no formal training they drive the business look at profit and loss and monitor their business’s from afar and are still fire fighting, they often don’t have any idea on what is likely to be delivered to their clients that day or the next and often and have no idea what is happening on the shop floor, one company I visited recently and I was talking about change management programmes with who has a staff of 60 employees , when I asked the managing director to give me a tour of the factory and introduce me to his staff on the shop floor and I quote “ yes I can give you the tour but I don’t know all the staff names as they come and go so quickly “ so what does that say !!
Middle management is often a family member that has been promoted through the business but has no formal qualification to support the business structure; I still see management at this
level motivating their staff
essentially by bullying or fear or promising them over time as solution to a production problem.
Sales training is on the up as all MD’s moan still that they never get the right calibre of sales staff, when the business is declining in sales what do they do they but employee more sales staff some paying £50 or £60k per addition of staff dependant on experience, the cost to the business is then disproportionate, they would probably only have to invest less than half of that amount on sales training of their current staff which would rejuvenate and revitalise the sales team and
still have the same effect on the declining bottom line or even look at the basic principles management of the shop floor all the old basics quality, lean manufacturing techniques, 5S, waste management , cost of reprints or re working jobs, supply chain ??
The shop floor staff a lot of them do have a formal qualification ie a traditional apprenticeship but this generation is now going out of the industry if they can to retire or leave the industry entirely, shop floor supervisors are not given the time money or resource to develop their staff or even have time to cross train their operators to use different kit.
The machine operators on the shop floor are given training upon the arrival of a new piece of equipment, instead of training 3 or 4 people to be able to operate the kit they pay the supplier to train only 1 or 2 employee’s normally down to cost, this then pushes up salary for specialised trained operators and then they jump ship as they are approached by a competing company who has purchased the same kit. This has created a fear with Management to actively discourage training in their businesses full stop at any level.
Then there is “APPRENTCISHIP TRAINING “with Leads City College closing its doors to formal print training where do businesses go now …. Proskills has shrunk to such a degree that they have almost disappeared and it is such a shame, the certification for the NVQS for the print industry sits under the glass federation as this is the only way funding could be drawn down……. So why did this happen?? Honestly because as an industry we did not see the need for new blood, companies talked the talk but were to short sighted to see that our fabulous industry training was going to disappear and that is exactly what has happened , so what happens now ……………

We wanted to know how the market is progressing
and what plans the print sector has to manage the upcoming World Cup and Olympics. The main feedback from the company owners we met was surprisingly grim they don’t see that it will be any benefit to their business’s or will increase sales for them at all. Whilst spending time with government training providers we were fortunate enough to visited a number of training and print colleges in Rio and Sao Paulo. Young people in Brazil have access to apprenticeships and youth schemes where they teach modern and traditional printing methods. Progression for the more ambitious happens via night school and everyone we spoke to was highly committed, possibly due to the fact that they are funding it themselves, sometimes with
some money from the government.
ISO 9001 and 14001 compliance is ridiculously expensive for certification and not easy for companies to manage. Glad we can offer such a good value option for our customers.

Is this the future of print training?
A radical new way of engaging in training and knowledge sharing is being developed to allow even more people to benefit from a time and cost saving alternative to existing schemes.
By rethinking the way we train people, new company POTI Training (Portable Online Training Information) has come up with a solution to knowledge sharing that will provide an answer to the most common reasons why training is not carried out in the print industry.
The people behind this new company are steeped in knowledge, not only about training itself, but also about the print industry as a whole, having worked in it for many years. Along with a range of top consultants, experts in different fields, and industry associations, the new solution, called the POTI, is presently in the process of being built. The aim is to make it the knowledge hub of the industry.
In today’s ultra competitive, mega busy print environment, where every penny and every second counts, training is often low on the agenda of many print businesses, and they see too many obstacles to integrating a sensible training structure within the business plan.
Cost is cited as a serious problem, with many companies finding that they simply do not have the resources to enable training, especially on a wide scale within the business.
Time constraints too play a part, with many feeling that the importance of just getting the job out of the door outweighs the luxury of personal development. There just isn’t enough time to send personnel out to college or to training courses, and who will cover for them when they are not there?
If there is time and money, what course should they go on? Is there any relevant training available? Is it going to be worthwhile? Companies should see training as a tool to grow and succeed.

This is challenging both financially and in terms of management resource where the skill set is often production based with little experience in the process of change.
The portal will be relevant to all print companies, whether small, medium or large, and will allow users to communicate with others and share resources and good practice.
How will it work?
When you log on, you will be asked a series of questions, which will create your profile and then suggest the best way for you to proceed – whether through training or through practical help. An App will be available for those who want to access the site from their mobiles.
The site will integrate ‘down time’ learning or ‘on the move’ learning where each individual creates a time scale for their project and the system alerts you as to whether you are on schedule. Training comes in short, sharp sessions
– little and often – allowing personnel to fit it in around the work schedule. Tools will include video, text, images, soundbytes, interviews, articles, pictures, illustrations, student notes, demonstrations, classroom teaching and much more – supplier information on how to use a printing machine will be available at the touch of a button. If input is required from lecturers, mentors or even consultants these will be organised through the portal. With
the portal, you will always have the support you need – just when you need it!
